Labor Day in Hamtramck

Once primarily Polish, this city (pronounced Ham-Tram-Ik) of some 23,000 citizens, surrounded except for one short side by Detroit, is now the most diverse city in Michigan. It hosts the annual Canoe Race & Polish Day Parade on Labor Day. Hamtramck is reportedly the first Muslim-majority city in the nation and the first to elect a Muslim-majority city council.
